From Sea to Jungle

By Guadalupe·5 min read

Most people picture San Blas as a collection of tropical islands with white sand, palm trees, and calm blue water. And while that's absolutely true, there's another side — a wilder, greener, more mysterious side.

In this exploration of the hidden corners of San Blas, we'll take you to the places where the sailing adventure meets jungle magic, and where nature tells a completely different story.

Sail to the Edge of the Jungle

Some of our longer private trips take you eastward, toward the mainland coast, where river mouths meet the Caribbean Sea. In these places, we anchor near untouched shorelines and switch from sailboat to kayak or dinghy to explore further.

You'll sail slowly into freshwater creeks and watch the scenery transform from coral reef to mangrove to dense rainforest — all within a few hundred meters.

What You'll See Along the Way

  • Huge mangrove trees with ancient tangled roots
  • Tropical birds — toucans, herons, kingfishers
  • Howler monkeys echoing through the canopy
  • Butterflies the size of your hand
  • Hidden freshwater pools and hanging vines

It's the kind of place that makes you feel small — in the best possible way.

Wild but Respectful

We never enter these areas without permission and local knowledge. These parts of Guna Yala are protected — both by nature and by tradition. Our Kuna guides share stories, legends, and practical knowledge about the forest:

  • Which trees are medicinal and how they're used
  • What plants you can eat — and what not to touch
  • How the local Guna people have interacted with this land for centuries
"Going from the open sea into a jungle creek on the same morning is one of those experiences that makes you realize how remarkable this place is."
